01 — Overview

Project overview

TicketResolver (marketed publicly as TBD Service) is a self-serve legal document platform that helps California drivers fight traffic tickets through a Trial by Written Declaration - without hiring a lawyer or appearing in court. Our team designed and built the complete product experience and the underlying application, from the public marketing site through the authenticated case dashboard, the four-step defense-building wizard, automated document generation and preview, integrated payment processing, and the post-payment mailing kit that walks a user through actually submitting their case to the court.

02 - The Challenge

The challenge

Fighting a traffic ticket by written declaration is a real legal process with a real court deadline - but the paperwork (a TR-205 Trial by Written Declaration and an MC-031 witness statement) is dense, unforgiving of errors, and unfamiliar to almost everyone who receives a ticket. The product had to turn a stressful, deadline-driven legal filing into something a non-lawyer could complete accurately in one sitting.

03 — User Journey

How someone actually uses it

A user lands on the marketing site, sees the flat $99 price and money-back guarantee up front, and creates an account. From there, the entire filing happens inside one guided flow before they ever pay:

01

Upload Documents. They photograph their citation, and the form fields (citation number, court, violation code, date, location, fine amount) populate automatically for them to confirm rather than type from scratch.

02

Violation Context. They select the real-world conditions at the time of the stop (weather, road, and traffic conditions) from grouped options, plus a free-text field for anything else relevant to their defense.

03

Evidence Upload. They attach supporting photos or dashcam footage, and can download the official MC-031 witness statement form, have a witness fill it out, and upload it back in.

04

Review Defense. The platform assembles everything into a formal, court-formatted declaration referencing the correct California Vehicle Code section, which they review before proceeding to payment.

Only after reviewing the finished, watermarked documents do they pay the flat $99 and unlock the clean downloads — at which point the dashboard shifts into a second phase: a submission checklist, step-by-step mailing instructions with the court's address ready to copy, and a running "what happens next" timeline through the court's decision.

04 — Key Features

What the platform actually does

Auto-fill ticket capture

Uploading a photo of the citation pre-populates the structured fields instead of asking the user to transcribe a legal document by hand.

Guided defense builder

Weather, road, and traffic conditions are captured as structured, groupable inputs rather than open text, so the generated declaration stays consistent and complete.

Evidence and witness handling

Photos, videos, and an official MC-031 witness statement can all be attached, with an evidence list and a one-click way to remove a file before submitting.

Auto-generated legal declaration

The four steps assemble into a formatted, court-ready statement of facts, citing the correct Vehicle Code section - the user reviews it, they do not draft it.

Preview-before-pay document gate

Generated forms are fully visible with a diagonal preview watermark before checkout, with an itemized order summary and a stated 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Post-payment mailing kit

Once paid, the experience shifts to getting it to the court: a submission checklist, the exact mailing address with copy-to-clipboard, and a numbered mailing guide.

Case and payment dashboard

A running case-progress timeline, a My Cases table, and a separate Payments history let a user manage multiple tickets at once.

Support built into the product

A categorized, searchable FAQ with topic counts, plus a direct contact form and a lightweight star-rating feedback modal after key moments in the flow.

05 — Platform & Technology

A note on the technical stack

This wasn't just a design engagement - our team built the full working application. TicketResolver runs on Laravel, with integrated payment processing handling the flat-fee checkout, and a document pipeline that reads uploaded citations and generates the TR-205 and MC-031 forms as formatted, court-ready PDFs. On top of that backend sit a multi-step wizard that preserves state and progress across steps, image and file upload for both citations and supporting evidence, a gated checkout that unlocks clean downloads only after payment, and a role-based authenticated dashboard separate from the public marketing site.

06 — The Design Approach

The approach

01

Research. Mapped how someone actually uses the product end to end - from a stressful first landing on the marketing site, through the guided defense flow, to the post-payment mailing steps.

02

UX structure. Designed responsive dashboards for clients and administrators, and developed intuitive workflows for document submission, validation, and review.

03

UI design. Built a scalable design system and reusable UI components - the same discipline FirstRay applies to every fixed-price package - and validated it with interactive prototypes before a line of production code shipped.

04

Development. Built the Laravel backend, integrated payment processing for the flat-fee checkout, and implemented the document pipeline that reads uploaded citations and generates court-ready TR-205 and MC-031 PDFs.

Final result

A complete, fully built platform - design, Laravel backend, payment processing, and document generation - that reduces friction throughout the ticket resolution process and creates an efficient workflow for legal service providers. The same end-to-end discipline our team now applies at FirstRay.
